You are to explore the idea of limited space within a photograph. Your goal is to create variety (a Principle of Art) and unify (another Principle of Art) the entire artwork using color, contrast, etc. Observe the following student artworks.
Example 1 Example 2 Example 3 Example 4 Using limited space 11 x 17 or 17 x 11, create an illustration using multiple angles of a person. Explore a variety of ways to create a new perspective. That could be focus on one part of the face, color changes, filter changes, etc.
Enduring Understanding: Excellence in art is developed through continuous practice, craftsmanship, refinement, and reflection.
Essential Question: How do refinement and craftsmanship enrich a narrative? Curricular Objective: VA:CR.3.1.H1.b. Refine the craftsmanship of artwork through skillful manipulation of tools and materials. Step 1: Analyzing Circlism Link Assignment 1 : Practice Image Link Assignment 1: Understanding the Process You have 2 class periods to work on this. Step 2: Applying Techniques Before you start the formative assignment below, I would seriously consider looking at the student examples in this link. Download the image below: Image Adjust the Posterize levels to 4. Apply the same process as Assignment 1. This time you are NOT limited to the number of circles to be used. However, you only have 3 class periods to work on it. Step 3: Create a portrait (YOU, FRIEND, FAMILY MEMBER, CHS staff member,?) using the circlism technique. You may set the Posterize level to a number that looks best for your image. It will probably look good between 3, 4, or 5. You will be evaluated on composition, effective use of shape to convey the form, and proper color analysis(matching) to enhance the final artwork.
Below is a terrible photo with the light BEHIND the subject. See the link above to avoid this mistake.CONNECTING AND RESPONDING: (Standards: 7-11) Using a platform of your choice, collect and observe portraits through the ages. Search for portraiture throughout the history of time and collect at least 20 portraits. These could be paintings, drawings, photographs, etc. Analyze the portraits as a whole.
CREATING and PRESENTING: (Standards 1-3) You will select the image or images that you intend to use for the final artworks. You will brainstorm and collect possible color choices, patterns, and/or appropriate background choices to enhance the work. This is very important for a stronger piece!!! Do you remember the elements and principles of design? Emphasis, Contrast, Unity, etc. Put these concepts to good use!! Consider the person, review the questions of your conversation with the person. You will develop a written reflection explaining why you made particular artistic choices and how you were influenced by the conversation/responses of the person.. I STILL FEEL LOST!!!!! What was the narrative of your summer? All work, all play, or a little bit of both? Compile a collection of imagery that could be used to tell the story of your summer. It could be actual photos from your summer or photos that share what your experiences were of the summer. Find inspiration via an internet search of magazine covers. What are some common "parts" of a magazine cover? Title? Quotes from articles? Catchy snippets to entice readers? Imagery? Borders and boxes? UPC code? Which issue? Font choice? Colors on the magazine? Background imagery needed? How do others perceive my identity? How might the media shape our view of the world and ourselves? To what extent might a culture/society/subculture shape an individual’s understanding or concept of happiness?
